At the Belem Climate Summit, Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang delivered a powerful message: China will accelerate its green transition and advance efforts to peak carbon emissions. Speaking as President Xi Jinping’s special representative, Ding highlighted China’s journey toward sustainable growth and its role in global climate governance.
Reflecting on the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, Ding noted that China’s 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions cover all economic sectors and greenhouse gases. For the first time, China has set an absolute emissions reduction target for 2035—a clear sign of its determination to deliver on climate goals.
Recently, the CPC Central Committee adopted recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan, which place carbon peaking and neutrality at the heart of China’s development. By promoting “carbon reduction, pollution reduction, green expansion and growth in a coordinated manner,” the plan aims to build a strong ecological barrier and boost green development in tandem with economic progress.
Ding outlined a three-point proposal for strengthening global climate action: stay focused on high-quality development that balances environmental protection with economic growth and social welfare; uphold the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities to ensure developed countries lead in emission cuts and support developing economies; and deepen global cooperation on green technologies, trade and financing to meet the rising demand for sustainable products and solutions.
As the world stands at a critical crossroads, Ding called on all nations to embrace true multilateralism, enhance unity and work hand-in-hand to secure a resilient, green future. His remarks underscore China’s pledge to turn words into concrete actions and to make greater contributions to tackling climate change.
