China Deploys Monitoring Team to Lashio Ahead of Myanmar Ceasefire

China has dispatched a ceasefire monitoring team to Lashio, Shan State, marking a key step in formalizing the recent truce between the Myanmar military and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA). The mission follows Chinese mediation efforts and reflects commitments made at the Kunming peace talks.

Spokesperson Guo Jiakun of the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed that the MNDAA withdrew its forces from Lashio and handed control to the Myanmar military earlier this week. Both sides invited China to implement the consensus reached in the talks held in Kunming, underscoring Beijing's role as a facilitator in this process.

'China and Myanmar are friendly neighbors,' Guo said, highlighting that stability in northern Myanmar serves the shared interests of both peoples. The monitoring team will oversee the ceasefire's integrity, ensuring that hostilities remain halted along the border.

Looking ahead, China plans to advance the Kunming peace talks, promote a lasting end to conflict in the region, and work with all parties in Myanmar to safeguard peace and stability along the China-Myanmar border. Observers note that sustained engagement and transparent oversight could build confidence among local communities and support broader regional security.
