China Launches New Anti-Cancer Handbook to Empower Prevention

As global cancer rates climb, prevention has never been more crucial. Ahead of National Cancer Prevention and Awareness Week (April 15–21), the Chinese mainland has unveiled the latest edition of "China's Essential Cancer Prevention & Care Guide," offering science-backed strategies to reduce cancer risk at every stage of life.

"Maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly and keeping a healthy weight are key to cancer prevention," says Tian Yantao, head of the Science Popularization Department of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association. The handbook highlights that obesity or overweight status raises the risk of at least 13 types of cancer, including colorectal, esophageal and liver.

The guide sets crystal-clear BMI thresholds: a BMI between 18.5 and 24 is ideal, 24–28 signals overweight, and 28 or above indicates obesity. With these benchmarks, readers from young global citizens to digital nomads can track their wellness journey anywhere the world takes them.

Five Key Steps to Reduce Cancer Risk

  • Adopt a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains
  • Stay active with at least 150 minutes of exercise weekly
  • Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption
  • Get vaccinations on schedule, such as HPV and hepatitis B
  • Cut back on sugar and avoid sharing personal hygiene items

"Cancer can be prevented and controlled by managing risk factors and adopting healthy habits," adds Wu Yongzhong, Party secretary of Chongqing University Cancer Hospital. "This handbook translates complex data into clear actions for everyday life."

Launched in 1995, National Cancer Prevention and Awareness Week mobilises communities across the Chinese mainland to embrace evidence-based screenings and timely care. The 2025 theme, "Prevent Cancer Scientifically, Live a Healthy Life," reflects a global push toward smarter public health measures.

From entrepreneurs eyeing the next big health-tech breakthrough to sports fans seeking longevity in athletic performance, China's new handbook is a must-read blueprint for anyone eager to take control of their health journey.
