The Zhuhai section of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) reached a milestone on Saturday, welcoming over 20,000 inbound and outbound vehicles. This marks the highest daily vehicle count since the bridge's inauguration in 2018.
Stretching 55 kilometers, the HZMB connects Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and Zhuhai in Guangdong Province, standing as the world's longest bridge-and-tunnel sea crossing. This impressive infrastructure not only facilitates seamless travel but also boosts economic and cultural exchanges among these regions.
During the first five days of the weeklong National Day holiday, from Tuesday to Saturday, the Zhuhai section saw a significant surge in traffic. According to the HZMB border inspection station, 453,000 passengers and 93,000 vehicles crossed, representing a year-on-year increase of 34.33% and 56.38%, respectively.
Notably, vehicles bearing plates from Hong Kong and Macao surpassed 56,000, reflecting a remarkable 73% annual growth. Border inspection officials attribute this rise to the growing popularity of mainland China as a destination for sightseeing and shopping among families from Hong Kong and Macao, especially during holiday periods.
Looking at the broader picture, official data from January to October this year reveals that over 20 million passengers have traversed the Zhuhai section of the bridge, outpacing the total volume from the previous year. This trend underscores the bridge's pivotal role in enhancing connectivity and fostering travel between these vibrant regions.
