Shanghai's Chongming Island, the world's largest alluvial estuary island, is home to the remarkable Dongtan Wetland. Situated on the easternmost coast, Dongtan lies along one of the globe's eight major migratory pathways, making it an essential stopover and habitat for countless migratory birds.
Each year, nearly one million birds visit the wetland, either for temporary stays or to spend the winter months. This vibrant ecosystem boasts records of 300 bird species, including 20 that are listed on the red list of endangered species, highlighting its significance for biodiversity conservation.
Recognizing its vital role, conservation efforts began in 1999 with the establishment of a nature reserve. These efforts culminated in the official designation of the Shanghai Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve in 2005, ensuring the protection of this invaluable natural resource for future generations.
