China’s Railways Set New Record with 20.69 Million Trips on May Day

China's railway network reached a remarkable milestone on May 1, handling 20.69 million passenger trips in a single day, as reported by the national railway operator, China State Railway Group (CSRG). This surge marks a new record and sets the tone for the annual May Day holiday, which spans from May 1 to 5.

The Ministry of Transport anticipates an average of 270 million trips across both private and public transportation modes throughout the holiday period. Officials highlighted that this year's mobility intensity will surpass levels witnessed during the same time in 2023 and even pre-COVID-19 times in 2019.

Travelers are flocking to popular destinations such as Sichuan's Chengdu, Shanghai, Sanya, Hong Kong, and international cities like Tokyo and Seoul. One enthusiastic passenger shared their plans, saying, \"We will spend our holiday in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. We've heard it's very beautiful and we are carrying lots of photography equipment to take pictures there.\"

Beijing Capital International Airport is also gearing up for the holiday rush, expecting to handle over 918,000 passenger trips and process more than 5,800 flights during the five days. A return peak on May 5 is projected, with around 207,000 passenger trips and over 1,200 flights expected on that day alone.

Shi Mengmeng, head of the Aviation Development Sector at Beijing Capital International Airport, noted that destinations like Chengdu, Shanghai, Sanya, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Seoul are among the most favored by travelers this May Day holiday.
