China's transport sector experienced a remarkable surge on Sunday, the second day of the Chinese New Year holiday, handling more than 273.75 million passenger trips. This marks a 22.6 percent increase compared to the same day last year, as reported by official statistics.
Of the total trips, highway traffic led the way with 261.64 million passenger trips, reflecting a 21 percent year-on-year growth. This increase is attributed to the efforts of a special work team established in January to ensure the safety and smooth operations during this year's Spring Festival travel rush.
Railway traffic saw a significant rise of 71.8 percent, reaching over 8.97 million trips. Air travel surged by 75.3 percent to nearly 2.17 million trips, while waterway passenger trips grew by 42.2 percent, totaling 977,000.
The Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important festival in the Chinese mainland, falling on February 10 this year. The holiday travel rush, marked by high transport demand as people journey home for family reunions, began on January 26 and is expected to continue until March 5.
