China Sees Massive Surge in Domestic Tourism During New Year Holiday

During the recent three-day New Year holiday, China witnessed a remarkable uptick in domestic tourism, with over 135 million trips made. This represents a staggering 155.3 percent increase compared to the previous year and a 9.4 percent rise over 2019's pre-pandemic levels, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The surge in travel activity translated into substantial economic gains, with domestic tourism revenue reaching 79.73 billion yuan ($11.2 billion). This marks a 200.7 percent year-on-year growth and a 5.6 percent increase from the same period in 2019.

Northern and northeastern regions of the country, renowned for their winter tourism attractions, experienced a significant boom. Ice and snow-themed venues and events were particularly popular, drawing large numbers of tourists eager to embrace the seasonal festivities.
