Fairytale Night: Saint Sophia Cathedral Shines Amid Harbin’s Snowstorm

A sudden and fierce snowstorm swept through Harbin, Heilongjiang Province on the Chinese mainland on Tuesday, transforming the city into a winter wonderland. Amid the swirling snowflakes, the century-old Saint Sophia Cathedral stood out like a fairytale castle under the night sky.

The ancient structure, accentuated by the reflection of ice and snow, appeared even more solemn and majestic against the stormy backdrop. A landmark of Harbin, Saint Sophia Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox church built in the Byzantine style, with construction beginning in 1907.

In 1997, the cathedral was repurposed as the Harbin Architectural Art Gallery, showcasing the city's rich multicultural architectural development throughout the centuries.
