Kenyan Engineer’s AI Tool Shields Cattle from Drought

In Nairobi, Danton Kipkurui, a Kenyan engineer at Huawei, has turned personal hardship into high-tech hope for cattle farmers facing severe drought.

Growing up, Kipkurui watched drought wipe out livestock and strain entire communities. Motivated to act, he and his team developed Wise AI in 2022, a smart application that blends IoT sensors, satellite imagery and weather forecasts. The tool helps farmers map herd locations in real time and plan ahead, reducing losses and protecting livelihoods.

Wise AI collects data from sensors attached to cattle and nearby water sources, then uses satellite images to identify pasture conditions. By combining these insights with weather predictions, the app alerts farmers to move herds before drought hits.

Kipkurui says he is proud his invention proves that technology can save lives and livelihoods. Wise AI is a prime example of how climate-smart solutions can empower communities and build resilience against environmental challenges.

As climate change intensifies, innovations like Wise AI show the potential of merging traditional knowledge with advanced tech. For young entrepreneurs and global citizens, Kipkurui’s story offers a blueprint for leveraging data-driven tools to tackle real-world problems.
