Late Wednesday night, a SpaceX Starship rocket test at the company’s Starbase facility in southern Texas ended in a spectacular explosion, sending a massive fireball soaring into the sky.
According to SpaceX, "the Starship experienced a major anomaly" around 11 p.m. local time while mounted on the test stand, part of preparations for its 10th flight test.
The company emphasized that a safety perimeter was maintained throughout the operation. "All personnel are safe and accounted for," SpaceX said in a statement on X.
CEO Elon Musk’s team added there were no hazards to nearby communities and urged the public to avoid approaching the site.
SpaceX is working closely with local officials as it investigates the incident. This ground trial was a key milestone ahead of Starship’s 10th flight test at Starbase.
