Measles Outbreak Surges in Texas & New Mexico

In a concerning trend, measles cases in Texas and New Mexico have climbed to 317, marking one of the largest outbreaks in the United States over the past decade. Just four days ago, the number stood at 294, already surpassing last year's total of 285 infections.

Gaines County, Texas, remains the outbreak's epicenter, with cases rising from 174 on March 14 to 191 on Tuesday. Across Texas, 36 patients have been hospitalized as health officials work to contain the spread.

The situation is not confined to Texas alone. Oklahoma's health department has reported four probable cases in unvaccinated individuals who were exposed to the outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico, underlining the risks of dwindling vaccine coverage.

Tragically, an unvaccinated child with no prior health issues died from the disease in Texas in February, marking the first measles-related death in the United States since 2015. Meanwhile, another death involving an unvaccinated adult in New Mexico is still under investigation.

Health experts emphasize the importance of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, urging communities to bolster vaccination efforts. This outbreak serves as a stark reminder for globally connected citizens, entrepreneurs, thought leaders, sports and entertainment fans, as well as travelers, to support proactive public health measures and informed healthcare practices.
