A symposium on China-ASEAN cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) development and governance convened in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Monday. The event aimed to leverage AI's potential for sustainable socio-economic development in the region.
Cambodian Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Vongsey Vissoth delivered the opening remarks, highlighting how AI has transformed industries by increasing productivity and serving as a catalyst for growth and prosperity. "We see AI as a tool not only for innovation, but also for inclusion and sustainability," he stated.
Vissoth emphasized that Cambodia has prioritized digital technology as a cornerstone of its development strategy. The government is committed to integrating technological innovation, including AI, to uplift all segments of society and ensure that no one is left behind.
He further noted that AI presents greater opportunities for cooperation between ASEAN and China. The alignment of China's Global AI Governance Initiative with ASEAN's vision for multilateral collaboration underscores a shared commitment to coordinated efforts that bridge regional and global aspirations. "For ASEAN nations and China, AI offers unparalleled opportunities to leapfrog developmental barriers, tackle persistent challenges, and usher in a new age of prosperity, inclusiveness, and sustainability," Vissoth added.
Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin echoed these sentiments, stating that China and ASEAN have a solid foundation, vast potential, and broad opportunities for cooperation in the field of AI. "China is willing to strengthen cooperation in the development and governance of AI with ASEAN countries, including Cambodia," he affirmed.
