GSMA CEO Predicts $680 Billion AI Boost for Telecom Industry by 2044

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize the telecommunications industry, with projections estimating a monumental $680 billion boost over the next 15 to 20 years. John Hoffman, CEO of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), shared these insights during his speech at the 2024 World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit in Zhejiang Province.

Referencing a report by McKinsey, Hoffman emphasized AI's transformative potential, not just for businesses but for society as a whole. \"AI is emerging as a powerful force with the potential to transform business and society on an unprecedented scale,\" Hoffman stated.

Current trends show that about 81 percent of telecom operators worldwide are actively testing generative AI solutions. Operators in the Chinese mainland are at the forefront of this movement, driven by substantial investments, robust government support, and a thriving tech ecosystem.

Leading companies such as China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom have made significant strides in AI research and application. Their innovations are reshaping public services, supply chains, and healthcare systems. For instance, an intelligent computing service platform has been launched in northwest China to aid local flood control efforts, while an AI database in southwest China focuses on preserving and developing cultural diversity.

Globally, these advancements could improve the lives of over 150 million people within the next five years through enhanced mobile big data and AI solutions. However, Hoffman also highlighted the importance of ethical and sustainable AI development, urging the industry to balance opportunities with responsibilities.

The summit, themed \"Embracing a People-centered and AI-for-good Digital Future: Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace,\" continues until Friday, showcasing the latest innovations and discussions shaping the digital landscape.
