China sees a significant surge in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, signaling a robust commitment to sustainable transportation and innovation. As of the end of September 2024, the nation boasts an impressive 11.43 million EV charging piles, marking a 49.6% increase compared to the previous year, according to the latest data from the National Energy Administration.
Breaking down the numbers, approximately 3.33 million of these charging facilities are public, providing widespread access for EV owners across urban and rural areas. Meanwhile, 8.1 million remain private, catering to the burgeoning number of individuals embracing electric mobility in their personal spaces.
With a total of 28.09 million registered new energy vehicles on China’s roads, the current ratio stands at one charging pile for every 2.46 vehicles. This statistic underscores the expanding network aimed at alleviating range anxiety and promoting the adoption of EVs nationwide.
In the first nine months of 2024 alone, China reported a net increase of 2.84 million charging piles, alongside a substantial rise in charging activity. The total charging amount reached 66.67 billion kWh, up 12.4% year on year, reflecting the growing reliance on electric power for transportation.
The National Energy Administration emphasized that the expanding charging infrastructure extends services across more highways and into counties and towns, which have seen the number of charging units grow to 417,000 by the end of September. This strategic expansion ensures that EV drivers have reliable access to charging stations, further cementing electric vehicles as a sustainable and practical choice for the future.
