E. coli Outbreak: McDonald’s Links Slivered Onions to Illnesses Across 12 States

A recent E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's has affected 90 individuals across a dozen U.S. states, with 27 hospitalizations and one reported death in Colorado. Health authorities from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have identified fresh, slivered onions used in Quarter Pounders and other menu items as the likely source of the contamination. These onions, supplied by Taylor Farms, were subject to a voluntary recall, prompting McDonald's to temporarily remove them from their offerings.

The outbreak, which emerged earlier this month, caused several restaurants to pull Quarter Pounders from their menus as they investigated the source of the illness. McDonald's resumed selling the hamburgers after recent tests for E. coli returned negative results, ensuring the safety of their ingredients.

E. coli infections typically result in stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting lasting three to four days. While most individuals recover without needing medical treatment, some cases can lead to severe complications.
