Global Scientists Gather in Shanghai for 2024 World Laureates Forum

The 2024 World Laureates Forum (WLA Forum) kicked off on Friday at its permanent venue in Shanghai, bringing together nearly 300 scientists from over 20 countries and regions. Under the annual theme \"Excellence in Science,\" the forum features 11 Nobel laureates, more than 40 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and around 100 outstanding young scientists.

The opening ceremony was a two-part event. The first segment celebrated the WLA Prize, honoring Professor Jon Kleinberg from Cornell University and Professor Jeremy Nathans from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for their groundbreaking work in computer science, mathematics, life science, and medicine. Both laureates have established strong ties with China's scientific community, mentoring Chinese students and collaborating with Chinese research institutions. This marks their first visit to Shanghai, where they will engage in various academic presentations and exchange activities.

Following the awards, five leading scientists, including three Nobel laureates and esteemed academicians, delivered keynote speeches on the latest global advancements in life sciences, physical sciences, and intelligent sciences. Their insights set the tone for a forum dedicated to fostering international collaboration and innovation.

A highlight of this year's forum is its expanded accessibility. For the first time, the event is open to the public, allowing professional audiences from universities and research institutions to register and attend in person. Additionally, the award winners will visit local universities, research institutions, and middle schools, offering a scientific feast of global excellence to researchers and young scholars.

As the 2024 WLA Forum unfolds, Shanghai stands as a hub for scientific dialogue and discovery, reinforcing its position in the global scientific community.
