In a groundbreaking move, tech giant Meta has partnered with renowned horror film production company Blumhouse to test its latest AI video tool, Movie Gen. This collaboration aims to revolutionize the horror genre by integrating advanced artificial intelligence into the creative process.
Movie Gen, announced earlier this month, is still under development and is expected to be available to the public next year. In the meantime, Meta is working closely with Blumhouse filmmakers, known for iconic franchises like Paranormal Activity, The Purge, and Insidious, to refine and enhance the tool's capabilities.
Oscar-winning actor Casey Affleck, who received early access to Movie Gen, described it in a promotional video as \"more like a collaborator than it is like a tool.\" This sentiment highlights the potential of AI to augment rather than replace human creativity.
Last year's writers' strike in Hollywood brought AI to the forefront, with many creatives voicing concerns about AI's role in scriptwriting and acting. However, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum sees the partnership as a positive step. \"These are going to be powerful tools for directors, and it's important to engage the creative industry in their development to make sure they're best suited for the job,\" Blum stated in a Meta blog post.
To showcase Movie Gen's potential, Meta released a captivating three-minute video produced by filmmaker Aneesh Chaganty. The video plays on the trope of fearing AI disrupting the industry, as Chaganty uses Movie Gen to transform his childhood footage by adding aliens, changing locations, and creating dramatic effects. The voiceover concludes, \"I hate AI, but with a tool like this … I dunno … maybe I would've just dreamt a little bigger.\"
Meta touts Movie Gen's ability to generate videos with sound from short prompts or photos as a significant advancement, even though the tool currently supports only 16-second clips. This innovation could pave the way for new storytelling methods in the horror film industry and beyond.
