World Bank Report: Off-Grid Solar to Power 400 Million Globally

A new report by the World Bank underscores the pivotal role of off-grid solar solutions in bridging the global electricity gap. Released Tuesday in Nairobi, Kenya, the 2024 Off-Grid Solar Market Trends Report reveals that off-grid solar remains the most economical method to provide electricity to nearly 400 million people worldwide who currently lack access.

The report highlights that between 2020 and 2022, off-grid solar accounted for 55 percent of new electricity connections in sub-Saharan Africa, where over 80 percent of the region's unelectrified population resides. This achievement was showcased during the Global Off-Grid Solar Forum and Expo 2024, which gathered over 1,500 delegates, including government officials and industry leaders, to discuss the future of energy access.

Despite these advancements, approximately 685 million people around the world still remain without electricity. As of the end of 2023, more than 560 million individuals relied on grid solar solutions for their household and commercial energy needs.

Fan Qimiao, World Bank country director for Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, and Uganda, emphasized the importance of affordable, clean electricity in lifting communities out of poverty and fostering sustainable development. He noted that off-grid solar is essential for expanding electricity access to businesses, schools, and health centers, thereby driving progress across various sectors.

Sarah Malm, executive director at GOGLA, praised the off-grid solar industry's resilience amid challenging macroeconomic conditions. She stated that a $21 billion investment is necessary to create a financially sustainable off-grid solar sector capable of reaching the most underserved populations and achieving global energy access and climate objectives.
