China Eastern’s C919 Takes Off on First Sustainable Aviation Fuel-Powered Flight

In a significant leap towards sustainable aviation, China Eastern Airlines successfully operated the first commercial flight of its C919 jet powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The flight departed from Beijing at 5:16 p.m. and landed in Shanghai at 7:01 p.m., marking a pivotal moment in the airline's green transformation journey.

Sustainable aviation fuel, a renewable energy source derived from sustainable resources or waste materials, plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions throughout its lifecycle. Its compatibility with existing aircraft and aviation infrastructure positions SAF as a key solution for decarbonizing the aviation industry.

The groundbreaking flight comes on the heels of a pilot program launched by China's National Development and Reform Commission and the Civil Aviation Administration of China. Beginning September 19, twelve flights operated by Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines from major airports including Beijing Daxing International Airport, Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, and Ningbo Lishe International Airport have been officially fueled with SAF.

This initiative underscores China's commitment to achieving its carbon peaking and neutrality goals. By integrating SAF into its operations, China's civil aviation sector is not only advancing a comprehensive green transformation but also strategically positioning itself for future growth and competitiveness in the global market.
