Chinese Mainland Prepares for Massive Travel Surge This Mid-Autumn Festival

The Chinese mainland is gearing up for a significant increase in travel during the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA) on Friday. To accommodate this surge, the NIA has implemented special arrangements to ensure safe, efficient, and smooth exit-entry services at various ports throughout the holiday period.

Estimations by the NIA indicate a daily average of 1.8 million passenger trips, marking a 21.9 percent rise from last year. The highest peaks in both inbound and outbound travel are expected on September 14 and 17, placing additional demands on exit-entry ports.

Major international airports are bracing for the influx. Beijing Capital International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport are projected to handle daily entry and exit volumes of 42,000, 95,000, 42,000, and 16,000 trips respectively. Additionally, passenger flows at land ports near Hong Kong and Macao are anticipated to rise significantly.

In response to the anticipated increase, the NIA has directed border inspection authorities at all levels across the Chinese mainland to enhance the monitoring of traveler volumes and port operations. The goal is to maintain customs processing times under 30 minutes through adequate staffing and robust security measures.

Border inspection teams are also instructed to collaborate closely with joint inspection units at ports and relevant local departments to effectively manage traveler flow and provide traffic support during peak hours. Travelers are encouraged to stay informed about port traffic conditions and customs clearance statuses, and to verify their documents thoroughly before embarking on their journeys.
