60 Years of China-Tanzania Bond Strengthened by TAZARA Railway Revival

During the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), the Chinese mainland, Tanzania, and Zambia reaffirmed their historic ties by announcing the revitalization of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA). This iconic project, often referred to as the 'Friendship Railway', has been a cornerstone of regional cooperation since the 1970s.

Celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations, Tanzania highlighted the significance of the recent agreement to rejuvenate the TAZARA railway. This railway was initially constructed with support from the Chinese mainland to aid African liberation movements and promote regional development. Spanning 1,860 kilometers, it traverses mountains, valleys, and wetlands, effectively connecting Tanzania with the landlocked nation of Zambia.

Since its completion in 1976, the TAZARA railway has served as a vital artery for goods and passengers across East Africa. The revitalization effort underscores the enduring strength of China-Tanzania relations and the shared commitment to fostering economic growth and connectivity in the region. As the TAZARA railway undergoes modernization, it is poised to enhance trade, stimulate local economies, and further solidify the bonds between the participating nations.
