China Elected to Chair APEC Energy Working Group for 2025-2026

In a historic move, a Chinese nominee has been elected as the Chair of the APEC Energy Working Group for the 2025-2026 term. This significant achievement was confirmed during the recently concluded 68th meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Working Group, according to a statement by China's National Energy Administration on Saturday.

This marks the first time China has secured a leadership position within the APEC energy cooperation framework. The election underscores the recognition of China's advancements in energy development by APEC member economies and signals China's deepening role in global energy governance.

The administration highlighted that China's election as chair demonstrates its unwavering commitment to advancing energy transformation, expanding high-level opening up, and actively sharing development opportunities worldwide. China has set ambitious goals to reach carbon peaking by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. In pursuit of these targets, the country has accelerated the development of a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system, achieving notable milestones in the energy sector.

Beyond domestic efforts, China continues to spearhead global energy governance reforms. It promotes the establishment of global clean energy partnerships, fosters the \"Belt and Road\" energy partnership, and advocates for an international energy transformation alliance. Through its leadership role in the APEC Energy Working Group, China aims to promote constructive and positive dialogue, ensuring that the group's development aligns with the directives of APEC leaders, ministers, and senior officials.

Looking ahead, China seeks to strengthen collaboration with all APEC member economies, promote regional sustainable development, and contribute Chinese wisdom, solutions, and strength to building a community with a shared future in the Asia-Pacific. Established in 1990, the APEC Energy Working Group is one of 14 specialized working groups under the APEC Senior Officials' Meeting Steering Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation, serving as a multilateral cooperation framework for the energy sector among APEC's 21 member economies.
