Sichuan’s Hydro Innovations Propel 50 Years of China-Brazil Trade

As China and Brazil commemorate half a century of diplomatic ties, Sichuan Province emerges as a pivotal player in their growing economic relationship. Over a decade ago, Sichuan manufactured 22 bulb turbines that were exported to Brazil, marking the beginning of a robust trade partnership centered around sustainable energy.

These turbines, now a decade strong in Brazil's energy grid, have been instrumental in the operation of the Madeira River’s hydroelectric stations. \"The 22 turbines are performing well,\" said Yan Zhiyong, President of Dongfang Electric Machinery, during his recent visit to the Jirau Hydropower Station in Brazil. Under full operation by the Brazilian side, Yan highlighted that the China-developed turbines are 0.39 percent more efficient than those from other leading global suppliers, generating an additional 40 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per unit annually.

Hydropower accounts for over 70 percent of Brazil's electricity production, presenting significant opportunities for companies like Dongfang Electric to foster economic growth and deepen Sino-Brazilian cooperation. \"Through this visit, we learned that Brazil's hydropower installations will continue to be upgraded according to the needs of the power grid,\" Yan stated. \"We hope to seize such opportunities to provide them with the best technologies – for the development of Brazil's new energy sector.\"

The Jirau Hydropower Project stands as the largest hydropower contract between China and Brazil to date, both in installed capacity and scale. Beyond energy, the collaboration between Sichuan and Brazil is poised to expand into sectors such as tourism, agriculture, cultural exchanges, and educational initiatives. This expansion is supported by recent developments, including Sichuan-led delegations to Brazil and the inauguration of a new Brazilian consulate general in Chengdu, which aims to facilitate technological cooperation and trade promotion.

Looking ahead, a commercial mission from the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso is set to visit Chengdu in early September, signaling continued momentum in China-Brazil relations. By leveraging Sichuan's strengths and Brazil's unique offerings, the partnership is expected to drive sustainable growth and innovation for years to come.
