In a remarkable display of growth, China's courier sector surpassed the milestone of 100 billion parcels delivered in 2024, achieving this feat 71 days ahead of the previous year. This surge highlights a booming consumer market and underscores the country's steady economic recovery, according to the State Post Bureau (SPB).
On average, each person in China received 71.43 packages this year, translating to an astonishing 5,144 packages delivered every second. These numbers not only reflect the massive scale of the industry but also position the express delivery sector as a critical indicator of China's economic health.
The express delivery industry set new records across three key metrics this year. The highest single-day delivery volume exceeded 580 million parcels, while the average monthly volume topped 13 billion parcels. Additionally, the sector's monthly revenue soared past 100 billion yuan (approximately $14 billion).
China's logistics network is renowned for its efficiency, reaching even the most remote areas with 234,000 delivery points nationwide. Impressively, over 95 percent of villages are covered by express delivery services. This extensive network enabled the next-day delivery of seasonal fruits from distant regions during the summer, showcasing the system's capability to handle diverse and time-sensitive deliveries.
Technological advancements have played a pivotal role in enhancing delivery efficiency. In select cities, drones can deliver packages in about 10 minutes, while autonomous delivery vehicles have significantly reduced delivery times. These innovations not only streamline operations but also pave the way for more sustainable and rapid delivery solutions.
Looking ahead, the SPB has outlined plans to further strengthen the logistics infrastructure. This includes enhancing logistics hubs in urban clusters, improving rural logistics systems, expanding international delivery services, and integrating the delivery chain with advanced manufacturing. These initiatives aim to sustain the sector's growth and maintain China's leadership in global express delivery volumes, a position it has held for ten consecutive years.
