China’s Hydrogen Tech Powers Paris Olympics’ Green Goals

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games have taken a significant leap towards sustainability, thanks to innovative hydrogen technology from the Chinese mainland. China-manufactured hydrogen refueling equipment has become the backbone of the event's transportation system, powering vehicles that shuttle athletes between competition venues.

\"This batch of equipment is indeed distinctive. They not only meet China's technical standards but have also obtained European certification,\" stated Liu Xing, vice president of the manufacturing company.

Houpu Clean Energy Group, based in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, previously supplied similar equipment for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games and the Chengdu Universiade. Liu emphasized that their extensive experience and reliable service have built trust with international clients.

At their headquarters, the company continues to assemble and test hydrogen refueling sets for export to Canada, Australia, and France, having already supplied over 100 sets globally. \"Developed countries share our high level of commitment to green energy and low-carbon practices,\" Liu added, noting that Europe's progress in hydrogen energy development ensures a steady flow of orders.

Hydrogen Energy for the Transportation Sector

Hydrogen energy is pivotal for the green transition in transportation, which ranks among the top emitters of carbon dioxide globally. Heavy-duty, long-haul transportation, in particular, stands to benefit from hydrogen's high energy density. However, challenges remain in achieving widespread commercial application.

\"Hydrogen energy's application in rail transit, such as converting from oil to hydrogen, is technically mature,\" explained Chen Weirong, dean of the hydrogen energy research institute at Southwest Jiaotong University. \"But we need to strengthen our technical standards and infrastructure.\"

To encourage hydrogen adoption, provincial and local policies are being introduced. In Sichuan Province, hydrogen-powered vehicles equipped with electronic toll collection devices may be exempt from expressway tolls, providing further incentives for green transportation.

Companies highlight that supportive policies and growing market demand are accelerating investments in research and development, aligning with global carbon neutrality goals.
