Shanghai is gearing up for a green revolution in its public transportation system, with plans to completely transition its bus and taxi fleets to new energy vehicles (NEVs) by the end of 2027. This ambitious initiative is part of the city's latest work plan, focusing on enhancing transportation infrastructure and equipment.
Between 2024 and 2027, Shanghai aims to replace over 9 percent of its total public buses and taxis with NEVs each year. Over this period, the city expects to introduce approximately 6,200 NEV buses and 11,000 NEV taxis, marking a significant shift towards sustainable urban mobility.
The plan includes phasing out aging buses and developing various types of new energy buses, such as pure electric models. Additionally, Shanghai will pilot fuel cell buses to diversify its NEV offerings. All new and updated vehicles will be required to be new energy models, with an average of 1,550 new energy buses updated annually.
For the taxi fleet, newly added or updated vehicles will predominantly be NEVs, with an expected average annual update of about 2,800 taxis. This move not only reduces carbon emissions but also promotes cleaner air in one of China's most bustling metropolises.
To support the longevity and efficiency of these new energy buses, Shanghai will enhance the maintenance of bus batteries and enforce stricter performance requirements. The city plans to replace the power batteries of buses promptly, with an estimated annual update of 500 sets of bus batteries.
This comprehensive transition underscores Shanghai's commitment to sustainability and innovation, setting a benchmark for other global cities aiming to modernize their public transportation systems.
