Beijing’s Digital Economy Surges Ahead, Outpacing City GDP in H1

Beijing Municipality's digital economy continued its rapid growth in the first half of the year (H1), achieving an added value growth of 7.8 percent year on year. This impressive growth rate is 2.4 percentage points higher than the city's GDP growth rate during the same period.

The digital sector played a pivotal role, contributing over 60 percent to Beijing's economic expansion. Specifically, the information service industry saw a 12.4 percent increase in added value, while the electronic manufacturing sector surged by 20.1 percent year on year, according to the latest data from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics.

Digitalization's application scenarios are continuously expanding within the city. By the end of June, autonomous driving tests had accumulated over 28 million kilometers. Additionally, Beijing boasts 74 internet hospitals and 254 medical institutions offering online diagnostic and treatment services, enhancing accessibility and efficiency in healthcare.

The bureau also reported a significant rise in innovation and investment within the digital economy. The number of patents for inventions authorized to major enterprises grew by 38 percent in H1, and investments in core digital industries increased by 32.5 percent. Furthermore, the city has built a total of 122,000 5G base stations, amounting to 55 base stations per 10,000 people, underscoring Beijing's robust infrastructure development.

This robust growth in the digital economy underscores Beijing's commitment to advancing technological innovation and digital transformation, positioning the city as a leading force in the new economy.
