New Biodegradable Band-Aid Enhances Wound Healing and Skin Regeneration

A new breakthrough in medical technology has emerged from researchers in the Chinese mainland, who have developed a band-aid-like biodegradable material that significantly boosts wound healing and skin regeneration. This innovative composite, crafted from silk fibroin, sodium alginate, and other natural polymers, was recently published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules.

The biocomposite’s unique micro-nano layered structure guides skin cells to regenerate full-thickness, native-like skin that retains normal sensory functions such as touch and pain perception. According to Wang Xinyu, a professor at Wuhan University of Technology, this advancement not only accelerates the wound healing process but also addresses critical issues like the shortage of autologous skin graft materials and reduces the risk of allergies associated with non-degradable repair materials.

Furthermore, the material is fully absorbed by the human body, breaking down into amino acids, carbon dioxide, and water, eliminating the need for removal and minimizing discomfort. This technology holds promise for repairing skin and mucosal defects in oral and maxillofacial regions, as well as treating burn-induced skin damage, marking a significant step forward in medical treatments and patient care.
