China’s AS700 Airship Takes to the Skies in First Low-Altitude Demo Flight

China's homegrown AS700 civil manned airship has successfully completed its inaugural demonstration flight, marking a significant advancement in the country's low-altitude tourism sector.

The historic flight took place on Thursday in central China's Hubei Province, launching from Zhanghe Airport in Jingmen City. The AS700 showcased its performance by simulating a scenic tour that included local parks, an island in the river, and other popular attractions across the city.

Passengers aboard the AS700 enjoyed breathtaking aerial views through its large panoramic side windows. The airship maintained a steady speed of 60 kilometers per hour while cruising at an altitude of 500 meters during the nearly two-hour flight.

Developed by the AVIC Special Vehicle Research Institute, the AS700 is a single-capsule manned airship designed to accommodate up to 10 people, including the pilot. With a maximum take-off weight of 4,150 kilograms and a flight range of 700 kilometers, the AS700 boasts an impressive endurance of up to 10 hours. Its ability to perform vertical take-off and landing in narrow fields makes it more mobile and flexible compared to other types of airships.

The AS700 received its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) last December. The first airship is scheduled for delivery by the end of this year, and the project manager, Du Wei, confirmed that there are already letters of intent for the purchase of 20 units from several interested buyers.
