China's AS700 civil manned airship has successfully completed its inaugural demonstration flight, heralding a new chapter in low-altitude tourism within the country.
Taking off from Zhanghe Airport in Jingmen City, Hubei Province, the AS700 showcased its capabilities in offering unique tourist flights. Operated by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), this groundbreaking airship embarked on a nearly two-hour journey, simulating scenic tours over local parks, river islands, and other popular attractions in the area.
Passengers aboard the AS700 enjoyed breathtaking aerial views through its large panoramic side windows, cruising at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour and an altitude of 500 meters. Developed by the AVIC Special Vehicle Research Institute, the AS700 is a single-capsule manned airship with a maximum capacity of 10 people, including the pilot. It boasts impressive specifications, including a maximum take-off weight of 4,150 kilograms, a flight range of up to 700 kilometers, and an endurance of 10 hours. Its ability to conduct vertical take-off and landing in narrow fields makes it more mobile and flexible compared to traditional airships.
Last December, the AS700 received its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). The first unit is slated for delivery by the end of this year, with the manufacturer already securing letters of intent for 20 units from various buyers, according to Du Wei, project manager of the AS700 civil manned airship.
This innovation signifies a promising leap in China's aviation and tourism sectors, offering a novel and sustainable way to explore the country's scenic landscapes.
