Chinese Electric Vehicles Electrify Egypt’s Roads with Rising Popularity

Electric vehicles (EVs) are making significant waves in Egypt, with Chinese manufacturers leading the charge. Poula Mounir, an EV seller in Cairo, recently switched from a gasoline-powered car to a Chinese BYD Song L SUV after meticulous comparisons.

Mounir praised the quality of Chinese EVs, highlighting their superior technology and battery performance. “I noticed a big difference in terms of cost, maintenance, and efficiency,” he shared with Xinhua. His BYD SUV boasts a range of over 600 kilometers on a single charge, setting it apart from many European counterparts.

The Egyptian market is experiencing a remarkable surge in electric car adoption. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, more than 1,419 electric vehicles were licensed, almost a third of the total licensed in the past three years. Overall, from July 2021 to June 2024, the number of electric cars on Egyptian roads reached 7,213, with BYD securing its position as the second best-selling brand.

Tamer Sabry, owner of a Cairo-based EV agency, attributes this growth to the economic climate. “In light of the difficult economic conditions in Egypt and the world, people tend to buy electric cars that are less expensive and have good quality at the same time,” Sabry explained. Chinese brands like BYD, Geely, ZEEKR, and NIO are meeting these demands, making them highly popular among Egyptian consumers.

Osama Aboul-Magd, head of the Egyptian Automotive Dealers Association, emphasized the global impact of Chinese EVs. “Chinese electric cars have had a significant impact on the development of the industry in the world and moved it to new horizons,” he stated. Aboul-Magd is optimistic about future collaborations, believing that partnerships with China will enhance Egypt’s efforts to localize the EV industry and boost the country’s strategic initiatives.

As Egypt continues to embrace electric mobility, Chinese EV manufacturers are poised to play a pivotal role in the nation’s journey towards sustainable transportation.
