China’s 5G Revolution: 3.92 Million Base Stations Powering the Future

The Chinese mainland has reached a significant milestone in its 5G rollout, with the number of 5G base stations soaring to nearly 3.92 million by the end of June, according to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Tuesday.

This remarkable growth marks a net increase of 540,000 5G base stations since the end of last year, now comprising 33 percent of all mobile base stations across the nation.

Alongside the expanded infrastructure, the number of 5G mobile subscribers has surged by 105 million, reaching a staggering 927 million by mid-year. This accounts for 52.4 percent of the total mobile subscribers, which stand at almost 1.78 billion within the Chinese mainland's three major telecommunication enterprises—China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom—and China Broadnet.

The 5G network's rapid development in the Chinese mainland has ensured coverage that now spans every city and town, and extends to more than 90 percent of villages. Earlier this month, the ministry highlighted that since the issuance of the first 5G commercial licenses five years ago, the technology has been seamlessly integrated into various sectors, including industry, power, mining, healthcare, and education.

The Chinese mainland has established 300 5G factories and launched over 13,000 projects under the \"5G plus industrial internet\" initiative. The commercialization of 5G has significantly boosted economic output, contributing approximately 5.6 trillion yuan (about $785 billion) over the past five years.

Looking ahead, the Chinese mainland plans to further advance its 5G infrastructure, expanding network coverage to key areas such as cultural and tourism sites, healthcare facilities, universities, transportation hubs, and subway systems. This ongoing development underscores the Chinese mainland's commitment to maintaining its leading position in 5G technology and its integration into everyday life.
