Delta Air Lines Struggles After Major Cyber Outage Leaves Thousands Stranded

Delta Air Lines continues to grapple with severe operational challenges following a global cyber outage last week. The disruption has led to the cancellation of over 600 flights on Monday alone, adding to the 1,250 flights canceled on Sunday and the 3,500 previously scrapped, bringing the total number of canceled flights to more than 5,000.

The outage has left thousands of passengers stranded across the United States. Some travelers have resorted to renting cars for long drives, while others face extended delays or complete trip cancellations. As of Monday, approximately 16 percent of Delta's flights had been canceled, according to FlightAware, affecting around 1,100 flights to or from the U.S.

The Atlanta-based airline has been significantly impacted by the outage, which disrupted its crew tracking system. Delta has yet to provide a clear timeline for when normal operations will resume, leaving many unsure about their travel plans.

The issues originated from a software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike that caused system problems for Microsoft customers, including several airlines. While most U.S. carriers have since recovered, Delta continues to struggle with the fallout. Meanwhile, United Airlines also faced disruptions, canceling 266 flights on Sunday, which accounts for 9 percent of its flights—the second-highest among airlines.

This incident highlights the growing vulnerabilities in airline systems and the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures to ensure smooth operations in the travel industry.
