New Power Unit Underway at China’s Xudapu Nuclear Plant

Construction has begun on the second power unit at the Xudapu Nuclear Power Plant in Liaoning Province, marking a significant step in China's push towards clean energy. Located in Huludao, the new unit boasts an impressive installed capacity of 1.29 GW and is set to become operational by 2029.

This latest addition is the fourth unit being developed at Xudapu, which overall plans to host six pressurized water reactors with a total capacity of 7.6 GW. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to generate a staggering 54 billion kWh of electricity annually, supporting the region's transition from heavy industry to sustainable energy sources.

The No. 2 unit features a third-generation domestically developed pressurized water reactor, enhancing both safety and performance. The entire project, backed by an investment of approximately $19.6 billion, is spearheaded by China National Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

Earlier units, No. 3 and No. 4, are progressing through the device installation phase, while construction on No. 1 began in November 2023. Xudapu stands as the second nuclear power station in northeast China, underscoring the region's commitment to expanding its clean energy infrastructure.
