In a significant move, India's Competition Commission of India (CCI) has found that Apple exploited its dominant position in the app store market on its iOS operating system. The confidential 142-page report, obtained by Reuters, highlights Apple's \"abusive conduct and practices\" in enforcing its proprietary in-app purchase system.
The investigation, which began in 2021, alleges that Apple forced app developers to exclusively use its billing and payment system, leaving them with no viable alternatives. \"Apple App Store is an unavoidable trading partner for app developers, and resultantly, app developers have no choice but to adhere to Apple's unfair terms,\" the CCI report stated.
Apple has responded by denying any wrongdoing, emphasizing that it is a minor player in India where Android-based phones are more prevalent. Despite Apple's stance, the CCI's findings suggest that the company's influence over digital products and services is substantial, particularly through the iOS platform and App Store.
This development comes amid growing antitrust scrutiny of Apple in other regions. Earlier in June, the European Union accused Apple of violating its tech regulations, potentially leading to hefty fines. Additionally, Apple is under investigation for new fees imposed on app developers within the EU.
Looking ahead, the CCI report marks a critical phase in the investigation. Senior officials will now review the findings, and Apple, along with other stakeholders, will have the opportunity to respond before a final decision is made. Potential outcomes include monetary fines and directives to alter business practices.
