The Chinese mainland has recorded a bumper summer grain harvest in 2024, with a total output of 149.78 million tonnes. This represents a 2.5 percent increase, or nearly 3.63 million tonnes, compared to last year, according to a survey conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics on Friday.
The sown area for summer grain rose to 26.613 million hectares in 2024, an increase of 4,500 hectares from the previous year, maintaining overall stability. Specifically, over 23 million hectares of wheat were planted, marking a 0.1 percent year-on-year growth as per the survey findings.
This year, the summer grain yield reached 5,628 kilograms per hectare, up by 2.5 percent or 135.4 kilograms compared to last year. Henan Province in central Chinese mainland led the way with a summer grain yield of nearly 37.86 million tonnes, the highest among all provinces, the survey revealed.
In May, the Chinese mainland called for concerted efforts to secure the bumper summer grain harvest and to promote the innovative development of agriculture. Emphasizing the importance of cross-regional mechanized harvesting, disaster prevention and control, and preparation for summer sowing, the mainland also highlighted the need to observe minimum grain purchase prices to ensure that farmers can earn sufficient income.
