Data has become the commanding height of a new round of competition for artificial intelligence (AI) in China, according to an industrial report released on Thursday at the closing ceremony of the 2024 China Internet Conference.
In 2023, the development of China's AI industry ushered in new space and new opportunities. As of December 2023, the core industry model had reached 578.4 billion yuan (about $79.7 billion), marking an 18 percent increase.
The country has also seen steady growth in industrial development and the number of enterprises. By March 2024, there were over 29,770 AI enterprises globally, with more than 4,500 based in China, accounting for approximately one-seventh of the total worldwide.
China's prowess in AI scientific research and innovation continues to strengthen, with the number of AI-related papers produced last year ranking second globally.
From 2013 to September 2023, the cumulative number of AI patent applications worldwide exceeded 1.29 million, with China contributing 64 percent of these filings.
Since 2023, China's network infrastructure has seen significant advancements. Key frontier technologies have been developed, digitalization in critical areas has improved, and the construction of a comprehensive network governance framework has accelerated. The cybersecurity industry has also seen high-quality growth.
Infrastructure developments such as 5G and gigabit optical fiber networks are nearing completion. The adoption and traffic scale of IPv6 have risen markedly, satellite internet projects are progressing steadily, and fiber broadband network service capabilities continue to enhance.
The report highlights that China's computing infrastructure has achieved a leading global position, and the cloud computing market has expanded rapidly.
