A recent survey has positioned the Chinese mainland as the global leader in the adoption of generative AI (GenAI), marking a significant milestone in the field over the past year. This surge in adoption follows the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in late 2022, which has accelerated interest and implementation across various sectors.
The survey, conducted by the U.S.-based AI and analytics software company SAS in collaboration with Coleman Parkes Research, gathered insights from 1,600 decision-makers spanning multiple industries worldwide. Strikingly, 83Ā percent of respondents in the Chinese mainland reported utilizing generative AI, outpacing 16 other countries and regions. For comparison, the United States saw a 65Ā percent adoption rate, while the global average stood at 54Ā percent.
Industries such as banking, insurance, healthcare, telecommunications, manufacturing, retail, and energy were among those surveyed. Interestingly, organizations in the U.S. are slightly ahead in terms of GenAI maturity and full implementation, with 24Ā percent compared to the Chinese mainland's 19Ā percent, and the U.K.'s 11Ā percent.
In recent years, the Chinese mainland's AI industry has made substantial strides in technological innovation, product development, and industry applications. The sector's progress is highlighted by the rapid advancement of large models and other new technologies.
Additionally, a report from the United Nations' World Intellectual Property Organization revealed that the Chinese mainland is leading the GenAI patent race, having filed over 38,000 patents between 2014 and 2023, compared to the U.S.'s 6,276 patents in the same period.
With more than 4,500 AI companies, the core AI industry in the Chinese mainland reached a valuation of over 578 billion yuan (approximately $79.5 billion) in 2023, reflecting a 13.9 percent year-on-year growth.
Looking ahead, the Chinese mainland plans to establish over 50 national and industrial standards for AI by 2026. These standards aim to create a comprehensive system guiding the high-quality development of the AI sector, as outlined by guidelines jointly released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and three other government bodies.
