China’s Internet Industry Celebrates 30 Years of Rapid Growth and Innovation

The internet landscape in China has entered its \"golden age,\" marking three decades of extraordinary growth and transformation. Shang Bing, president of the China Internet Association, announced this milestone at the opening ceremony of the 2024 China Internet Conference in Beijing on Tuesday.

Over the past 30 years, China's internet has evolved from its early stages into a formidable, globally leading network. Fixed broadband penetration has soared to an impressive 110.2 percent, a figure that exceeds 100 percent thanks to multiple subscriptions within some households. Moreover, the 5G network now spans over 90 percent of China's counties, ensuring widespread connectivity.

These advancements are reflected in the staggering number of users, with nearly 1.1 billion residents now connected to the internet. This vast user base has been a driving force behind the development of related technologies. Shang highlighted significant progress in large AI models, advanced semiconductor chips, and ongoing research into 6G technology.

Beyond technological innovation, the internet has profoundly enhanced daily life in China. The proliferation of smart devices, online shopping platforms, and ride-hailing services has made everyday tasks more convenient. Additionally, the widespread adoption of remote work has boosted business efficiency and transformed traditional work environments.

\"The world is witnessing unprecedented technological advancements,\" Shang remarked at the conference. \"Emerging information technologies like AI are reshaping both the digital and physical worlds. The future of the internet industry is undeniably bright, poised for even greater influence.\"
