China’s Electric Vehicle Market Soars with Record NEV Registrations in H1 2024

China has achieved a remarkable milestone in the first half of 2024, registering a record 4.397 million new energy vehicles (NEVs). This surge pushes the total number of NEVs on the road to an impressive 24.72 million by the end of June, marking a year-on-year increase of 39.41%.

In comparison, the first half of 2023 saw 3.128 million NEVs registered, which was already a substantial 41.6% increase from the same period in 2022. This upward trend underscores China's steadfast commitment to expanding its electric vehicle (EV) market and reducing carbon emissions.

As of June 2024, China boasts a total of 440 million motor vehicles in operation, including 345 million cars. Among the NEVs, all-electric cars dominate with 18.13 million units, accounting for 73.36% of the total NEV population. This dominance highlights the growing consumer preference for fully electric vehicles over hybrid models.

The automotive boom is further supported by a surge in new drivers, with 13.97 million individuals obtaining their licenses in the first half of 2024. The total number of licensed drivers in China now stands at 532 million, with car drivers making up a significant 496 million.

Urban centers are also experiencing a rapid increase in vehicle ownership. Currently, 96 cities boast more than 1 million cars each, an increase of eight cities compared to the first half of 2023. Notably, 43 cities have surpassed the 2 million mark, and 26 cities have more than 3 million cars.

Cities like Chengdu, Beijing, and Chongqing have each exceeded 6 million cars, while Shanghai, Suzhou, and Zhengzhou each host over 5 million vehicles. This concentration of vehicles in major urban areas reflects the ongoing economic growth and the increasing mobility needs of China's population.
