Shanghai Launches Driverless Vehicle Licensing at 2024 AI Conference

At the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, Shanghai took a significant leap into the future of transportation by issuing the first batch of recognition plates for completely unmanned vehicles. This groundbreaking move, announced via the Shanghai Pudong New Area official Weibo account, marks a milestone in the city's journey toward becoming a smart, autonomous metropolis.

Four certified enterprises have been granted clearance to test unmanned delivery, retailing, sanitation, and other innovative services across approved road sections. This initiative not only enhances the efficiency of urban services but also paves the way for a new era of autonomous technology integration into daily life.

Citizens of Shanghai can now reserve rides in these driverless cars through corresponding apps, offering a glimpse into the seamless, automated transportation experience of the future. Currently, all unmanned vehicles in the demonstration phase are available for free rides, allowing residents to experience firsthand the benefits and conveniences of autonomous transport.

Each vehicle must cover at least 5,000 kilometers in operation while ensuring the safety and reliability of its systems and passenger transport capabilities. Following this rigorous testing phase, relevant departments will conduct a final evaluation of the enterprises and their vehicles. Successful approval will enable these companies to commence commercial operations of their autonomous vehicles within designated areas, further integrating this technology into the fabric of Shanghai's urban landscape.

With these developments, Shanghai continues to position itself at the forefront of technological innovation, offering its residents and businesses the tools and infrastructure needed to thrive in an increasingly automated world.
