China Unveils 2024 Sci-Tech Priorities: AI, Green Manufacturing, and More

The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) has revealed its key focus areas for science, engineering, technology, and industrial technology in 2024.

During the main forum of CAST's annual conference held on Tuesday in Nanning, the capital of the Chinese mainland's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a total of 30 focus areas were highlighted. These areas span various fields, including artificial intelligence, new energy, high-end equipment, and life sciences.

Notable topics include research on digital humans and emotionally intelligent robots, rapid assessment for the precision preservation of machine tools, and the green manufacturing of drugs and functional materials through precise chemistry.

Additional priorities feature the biological basis of high photosynthetic efficiency in crops and the production of low-cost, low-carbon steel using clean energy.

This year's solicitation campaign garnered 597 proposals from 102 sci-tech associations nationwide, encompassing disciplines such as basic sciences, Earth sciences, ecology and environment, information technology, aerospace technology, and agricultural technology.

Since 2018, CAST has consistently identified and published major sci-tech issues, marking seven consecutive years of strategic focus.
