China is taking a significant leap forward in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector by planning to develop more than 50 national and industrial standards by 2026. This ambitious move, outlined in guidelines released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology alongside three other government bodies, aims to create a robust framework that will guide the high-quality development of AI across the country.
The new standards will cover seven key areas, including key technologies, intelligent products and services, and various industry applications. By establishing these standards, China seeks to promote technological progress, foster enterprise growth, and drive industrial upgrading. This strategic approach is expected to leverage AI in empowering new industrialization, aligning with the nation’s broader economic goals.
In recent years, China’s AI industry has made remarkable strides in technological innovation, product creation, and industry applications. The sector has been particularly dynamic with the accelerated development of advanced technologies like large models. Currently, China is home to over 4,500 AI companies, contributing to a core AI industry worth more than 578 billion yuan (approximately $79.5 billion) in 2023, marking a 13.9 percent increase year-on-year.
The government’s commitment to AI is further emphasized in this year’s work report, which introduced the AI Plus initiative. This strategic effort is designed to propel the expansion of the digital economy and lead the transformation and modernization of manufacturing sectors. By integrating AI across various industries, China aims to enhance efficiency, drive innovation, and maintain its competitive edge in the global market.
