China to Modernize Public Hospitals with Advanced IT Systems by 2027

China is set to revolutionize its public healthcare sector by enhancing information technology (IT) support across all tertiary public hospitals nationwide by the end of 2027. According to a recent circular issued by the National Health Commission and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 50 percent of these hospitals aim to adopt integrated operation and management information platforms by the end of 2025.

The initiative emphasizes the refinement, standardization, and digitization of internal processes within public medical institutions to achieve more efficient management and foster high-quality development in the healthcare sector.

To realize these ambitious goals, China plans to leverage modern IT technologies, including artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing. A key focus will be on improving interoperability and data sharing among various internal information systems, thereby enhancing the role of IT in business and economic management integration.

In parallel, health authorities will intensify efforts to combat illegal access to medical insurance funds through a three-year special operation. This move aims to curb fraud and regulate practices related to diagnosis, treatment, and pricing. The circular also highlights the importance of strengthening audit and supervision through advanced information technologies, establishing a robust long-term supervision mechanism.

With approximately 12,000 public hospitals across the country, including 2,800 tertiary public hospitals known for their specialized medical and health services, Chinaโ€™s push towards IT integration is poised to significantly impact the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery.
