In a remarkable milestone for China's aerospace sector, Bao Shuo has become the first female chief dispatcher of the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC) since its inception.
Born in the 1990s, Bao joined the BACC in 2017 after completing her graduate studies. Initially assigned to the down-up control post, she was responsible for issuing commands to spacecraft. Her exceptional skills and dedication led to her promotion in March 2019 to the dispatch position, where she oversees task organization, command, planning, coordination, and management.
The BACC plays a crucial role in China's manned spaceflight and deep space exploration missions, serving as the vital link between space and Earth. Bao's role as a dispatcher involves handling complex and voluminous information from multiple sessions, requiring her to prioritize urgent messages and make swift decisions under pressure.
Despite being naturally introverted and initially hesitant to communicate, Bao has thrived in her role. Her breakthrough came in 2020 when she was appointed chief dispatcher for China's first Mars exploration mission, Tianwen-1. One of the mission's biggest challenges was managing the significant transport delay between Mars and Earth, which reached over 40 minutes for two-way communication.
Under Bao's leadership, the Tianwen-1 mission successfully navigated these challenges. Her ability to make accurate judgments and respond promptly ensured the mission's smooth operation. Bao describes the moment when dispatch concludes and control is handed back as her happiest and most relaxing time.
Bao Shuo's journey is a testament to her resilience and expertise, inspiring many young professionals and aspiring astronauts around the world.
