China Leads the World with Over 3.8 Million 5G Base Stations

China has surpassed a significant milestone in mobile connectivity, boasting more than 3.8 million 5G base stations by the end of May 2024, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Zhao Zhiguo, the ministry's chief engineer, unveiled these impressive numbers at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Shanghai. Remarkably, China's 5G infrastructure represents 60 percent of the global total, highlighting the country's leadership in the mobile communication sector.

In the domestic market, over half of all mobile phone users in China have transitioned to 5G technology, signaling a robust adoption rate and a strong foundation for future innovations.

Looking ahead, GSMA, an international operator association, forecasts that the number of 5G connections in China is set to reach 1.6 billion by the end of 2030. This projection accounts for nearly a third of all global 5G connections, underscoring China's pivotal role in shaping the future of mobile networks.

John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA, praised China for being at the forefront of mobile communication advancements. He highlighted the country's significant contributions to innovative exploration and the development of 5G+ vertical industries, including intelligent manufacturing, transportation, and healthcare. These sectors are poised to benefit greatly from the expansive and advanced 5G infrastructure, driving economic growth and enhancing quality of life.
