STSS Cases in Japan Exceed 1,000 in 2024: Urgent Health Alert

Japan is grappling with a significant surge in Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) cases, surpassing 1,000 reported instances in 2024, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID).

As of June 9, the preliminary data shows 1,019 STSS cases since the start of the year, marking a sharp increase compared to previous years. By June 2 alone, 977 cases were recorded, already eclipsing last year's total of 941.

STSS, a severe invasive streptococcal infection caused by Group A Streptococcus, presents rapidly with symptoms such as sore throat, fever, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal issues, and septic signs like low blood pressure. If not promptly treated, the infection can lead to devastating outcomes including multi-organ failure, with a mortality rate exceeding 30%.

The latest weekly report from the NIID highlights Tokyo as the epicenter of the outbreak, reporting 150 cases. Aichi and Saitama prefectures follow with 69 and 68 cases respectively.

Transmission of STSS occurs through droplets from the nasal or throat mucosa and contact with wounds. Experts warn that early symptoms are often mistaken for a common cold due to the disease's rapid progression. Key warning signs include a high fever accompanied by delirium or quickly spreading redness around a wound, necessitating immediate medical attention.

Healthcare professionals are urging the public to remain vigilant and seek prompt medical care if experiencing severe symptoms to prevent the life-threatening progression of STSS.
