In a groundbreaking achievement, Chinese drone manufacturer DJI has successfully conducted the world's first drone delivery tests on Mount Qomolangma, also known as Mount Everest, on the Nepal side. These tests highlight the immense potential of DJI's drone technology in revolutionizing high-altitude mountaineering logistics, emergency rescue operations, and environmental conservation efforts.
During the April tests, DJI deployed its FlyCart 30 drone to transport three bottles of oxygen and 1.5 kilograms of other essential supplies from the Base Camp, situated at an altitude of 5,364 meters, to Camp 1 at approximately 6,000 meters. Additionally, the drone efficiently carried down garbage during its return trip, demonstrating its capability to manage waste in one of the world's most challenging environments.
Christina Zhang, DJI's senior corporate strategy director, emphasized the transformative potential of drone deliveries on the world's highest peak. \"The ability to safely transport equipment, supplies, and waste by drone can revolutionize mountaineering logistics, facilitate trash clean-up efforts, and improve safety for all involved,\" Zhang stated.
The DJI FlyCart 30 proved its mettle by flying up to 6,191.8 meters, maintaining a steady payload of 15 kilograms at an altitude of 6,000 meters. This innovation addresses the notorious transportation bottleneck posed by the Khumbu Icefall, one of the most perilous sections of the climb. Traditionally, Sherpa guides navigate this treacherous terrain multiple times a season to transport vital supplies, a task that DJI's drones aim to alleviate, enhancing both safety and efficiency.
Beyond logistics, the environmental impact of increased mountaineering activities has become a pressing concern. DJI's drones offer a sustainable solution by enabling regular trash removal programs, thereby protecting Mount Qomolangma's pristine environment.
Following the successful tests, a Nepali drone operator began offering regular drone delivery services on Mount Qomolangma in May, while DJI's delivery drones have also been utilized on established commercial climbing routes like Mount Gongga in China. Experts like Jin Wei from the China UAV Industry Innovation Alliance highlight that these advancements not only demonstrate the versatility of UAVs in harsh environments but also pave the way for further innovations in the industry.
