China Enhances National Grain Storage, Surpasses 700 Million Tonnes in 2023

China has significantly boosted its national grain storage capacity, exceeding 700 million tonnes by the end of 2023. This marks a 36 percent increase since 2014, as reported by an official from the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), China constructed and upgraded grain storage facilities with a combined capacity of over 65 million tonnes. Zhou Guanhua, director of the administration's safe storage and technology department, highlighted improvements in key performance indicators such as airtightness and thermal insulation, according to the Science and Technology Daily.

The country has developed a comprehensive grain storage system that aligns grain production, reserves, and distribution. This system has effectively met China's grain purchase and storage needs in terms of overall capacity.

Outdated storage methods like stack storage and open-air piles have been largely phased out. Instead, state-owned grain warehouses now utilize \"four-in-one\" grain storage technologies, which include mechanical ventilation, fumigation, monitoring, and cooling, thereby enhancing storage quality.

China is also promoting green grain storage technologies, focusing on temperature control, internal circulation, and comprehensive pest control. By the end of 2023, the total capacity of low-temperature and near-low-temperature grain warehouses nationwide reached 200 million tonnes, maintaining a comprehensive loss rate within a reasonable 1 percent.
